Funerals

Two years ago, around this time, I went for a convention held by the church of Pentecost. Ooops, sorry, it wasn’t a convention. It was a funeral but the aura was that of a convention. Who had died? An elderly woman who had served God and served man. There were stories of how she prayed for life for her daughter when she was declared dead by doctors. This daughter came back to life and was at her funeral, whole and hearty. Many more stories of her good deeds kept spilling at her funeral grounds. There were hundreds of Men and Women of God; from lay ministers to Bishops. I said to myself, ‘this is the kind of funeral I want. When I go and be with the Lord, I want Men and Women of God to converge and praise the name of God.’

That funeral stared up a lot of thoughts in me and I reflected on a lot of issues of life. Suddenly, I realised the people who gather at funerals are a direct reflection of the life the deceased lived. The people who desire to bury you are usually the people whose life you have touched the most. When Tabitha died, before Jesus could enter the room, the house was filled with people she had helped, some of them holding clothes she had sewn for them. When that youth who lived a reckless life died, there was party after party, 12 midnight, and the whole neighborhood felt like a pub.

Today, reflect silently about how your life has been, how your funeral will be and which kind of people will dominate at the funeral grounds. What kind of decisions will be taken because you would like or would not like them? Will they do just anything because you never objected to anything or they wouldn’t do something because you would want or wouldn’t want some things? Well, you may say that you don’t care what happens at your funeral, because after all, you will be dead then. Let me hasten to add, that beyond how your funeral will be, is where your soul will be in the next life. Most importantly, ask yourself, in the next life, where do I stand?
